    Classification of Birds and UAVs Based on Radar Polarimetry

    This letter aims to show the potential of using polarimetric parameters to distinguish between large birds and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of comparable size in the context of a modern long-range air defense radar. Time is a critical resource in such systems, and techniques for robust noncooperative target recognition not relying on spatial resolution or long dwell times are highly desired. Furthermore, methods less dependent on target micromotion are, in many cases, required. Methods exploiting polarimetric features are shown to have potential in both cases. An experiment in S-band shows that a simple nearest-neighbor classifier can achieve good separation between UAVs and birds both with and without detectable micromotion based on a set of polarimetric parameters alone

    Investigation of non-cooperative target recognition of small and slow moving air targets in modern air defence surveillance radar

    This thesis covers research in the field of non-cooperative target recognition given the limitations of modern air defence surveillance radars. The potential presence of low observable manned or unmanned targets within the vast surveillance volume demand highly sensitive systems. This may again introduce unwanted detections of single birds of comparable radar cross section, previously avoided by use of wide clutter rejection filters and sensitivity time control. The demand for methods effectively separating between birds and slow moving manmade targets is evident. The research questions addressed are connected to identification of characteristic features of birds and manmade targets of comparable size. Ultimately the goal has been to find methods that can utilize such features to effectively distinguish between the classes. In contrast to the vast majority of non-cooperative target recognition publications, this thesis includes non-rigid targets covering a range of dielectric properties and targets falling in the resonant and Rayleigh scattering regions. These factors combined with insufficient spatial resolution for classification require alternative approaches such as utilization of periodic RCS modulation, micro-Doppler- and polarimetric signatures. Signatures of birds and UAVs are investigated through electromagnetic prediction and radar measurements. A flexible and fully polarimetric radar capable of simultaneous operation in both L- and S-band is developed for collection of relevant signatures. Inspired by the use of polarimetric radar for classification of precipitation covered in the weather radar literature, focus has been on using similar methods to recognize signatures of rotors, propellers and bird wings. Novel micro-Doppler signatures combining polarimetric information from this sensor is found to hold information about the orientation of such target parts. This information combined with several other features is evaluated for classification. The benefit from involving polarimetric measurements is especially investigated, and is found to be highly valuable when information provided by other methods is limited

    Genetic Architecture of Plasma Adiponectin Overlaps With the Genetics of Metabolic Syndrome–Related Traits

    OBJECTIVE - Adiponectin, a hormone secreted by adipose tissue, is of particular interest in metabolic syndrome, because it is inversely correlated with obesity and insulin sensitivity. However, it is not known to what extent the genetics of plasma adiponectin and the genetics of obesity and insulin sensitivity are interrelated. We aimed to evaluate the heritability of plasma adiponectin and its genetic correlation with the metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome-related traits and the association between these traits and 10 ADIPOQ single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - We made use of a family-based population, the Erasmus Rucphen Family study (1,258 women and 967 men). Heritability analysis was performed using a polygenic model. Genetic correlations were estimated using bivariate heritability analyses. Genetic association analysis was performed using a mixed model. RESULTS - Plasma adiponectin showed a heritability of 55.1%. Genetic correlations between plasma adiponectin HDL cholesterol and plasma insulin ranged from 15 to 24% but were not significant for fasting glucose, triglycerides, blood pressure, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and C-reactive protein. A significant association with plasma adiponectin was found for ADIPOQ variants rs17300539 and rs182052. A nominally significant association was found with plasma insulin and HOMA-IR and ADIPOQ variant rs17300539 after adjustment for plasma adiponectin. CONCLUSIONS - The significant genetic correlation between plasma adiponectin and HDL cholesterol and plasma insulin should be taken into account in the interpretation of genome-wide association studies.     TCF7L2 polymorphisms and inflammatory markers before and after treatment with fenofibrate

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Inflammation is implicated in causing diabetes. We tested whether transcription factor 7 like-2 (TCF7L2) gene polymorphisms (rs12255372 and rs7903146), consistently associated with type 2 diabetes, are associated with plasma concentrations of inflammatory markers before and after three weeks of daily treatment with fenofibrate.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Men and women in the Genetics of Lipid-Lowering Drugs and Diet Network study (n = 1025, age 49 ± 16 y) were included. All participants suspended use of lipid-lowering drugs for three weeks and were then given 160 mg/day of fenofibrate for three weeks. Inflammatory markers and lipids were measured before and after fenofibrate. ANOVA was used to test for differences across TCF7L2 genotypes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Under the additive or dominant model, there were no significant differences (<it>P </it>> 0.05) in the concentrations of inflammatory markers (hsCRP, IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α and MCP-1) across TCF7L2 genotypes in the period before or after treatment. For both rs12255372 and rs7903146, homozygote T-allele carriers had significantly higher (<it>P </it>< 0.05) post-fenofibrate concentrations of MCP-1 in the recessive model. No other significant associations were detected.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Overall these data show no association between TCF7L2 polymorphisms and the inflammatory markers suggesting that the effects of TCF7L2 on diabetes may not be via inflammation.</p

    Finance, foreign (direct) investment, and the Dutch disease: the case of Colombia

    In recent years Colombia has grown relatively rapidly, but it has been a biased growth. The energy sector (the locomotora minero-energetica, to use the rhetorical expression of President Juan Manuel Santos) grew much faster than the rest of the economy, while the manufacturing sector registered a negative rate of growth. These are classic symptoms of the well-known ‘Dutch disease’, but our purpose here is not to establish whether the Dutch disease exists or not, but rather to shed some light on the financial viability of several, simultaneous dynamics: (i) the existence of a traditional Dutch Disease being due to a large increase in mining exports and a significant exchange rate appreciation; (ii) a massive increase in foreign direct investment (FDI), particularly in the mining sector; (iii) a rather passive monetary policy, aimed at increasing purchasing power via exchange rate appreciation; (iv) more recently, a large distribution of dividends from Colombia to the rest of the world and the accumulation of mounting financial liabilities. The paper will show that these dynamics constitute a potential danger for the stability of the Colombian economy. Some policy recommendations are also discussed

    Overweight across the life course and adipokines, inflammatory and endothelial markers at age 60-64 years: evidence from the 1946 birth cohort.

    BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: There is growing evidence that early development of obesity increases cardiovascular risk later in life, but less is known about whether there are effects of long-term excess body weight on the biological drivers associated with the atherosclerotic pathway, particularly adipokines, inflammatory and endothelial markers. This paper therefore investigates the influence of overweight across the life course on levels of these markers at retirement age. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Data from the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development (n=1784) were used to examine the associations between overweight status at 2, 4, 6, 7, 11, 15, 20, 26, 36, 43, 53 and 60-64 years (body mass index (BMI)⩾25 kg m(-2) for adult ages and gender-specific cut-points for childhood ages equivalent to BMI⩾25 kg m(-2)) and measurements of adipokines (leptin and adiponectin), inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6)) and endothelial markers (E-selectin, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and von Willebrand factor) at 60-64 years. In addition, the fit of different life course models (sensitive periods/accumulation) were compared using partial F-tests. RESULTS: In age- and sex-adjusted models, overweight at 11 years and onwards was associated with higher leptin, CRP and IL-6 and lower adiponectin; overweight at 15 years and onwards was associated with higher E-selectin and t-PA. Associations between overweight at all ages earlier than 60-64 with leptin, adiponectin, CRP and IL-6 were reduced but remained apparent after adjustment for overweight at 60-64 years; whereas those with E-selectin and t-PA were entirely explained. An accumulation model best described the associations between overweight across the life course with adipokines and inflammatory markers, whereas for the endothelial markers, the sensitive period model for 60-64 years provided a slightly better fit than the accumulation model. CONCLUSIONS: Overweight across the life course has a cumulative influence on adipokines, inflammatory and possibly endothelial markers. Avoidance of overweight from adolescence onwards is likely important for cardiovascular disease prevention
